Supreme Court begins January sitting this week
The U.S. Supreme Court is back in session this week as it hears oral argument in eight cases during its January sitting. The Court will hear five cases this week and three next week. The Court will hear nine cases in its February sitting, which runs from Feb. 24 to March 4. A date for argument has not yet been set for 15 cases.
13 state legislative special elections on tap for January -- most since 2011
Tuesday, special elections for six state legislative seats were held in five states. Another seven special elections are scheduled to take place by the end of January. This month's 13 special elections are the most in any January since we began our comprehensive coverage of such races in 2011.
Oklahoma voters to decide Medicaid expansion via citizen initiative
State Question 802 would provide Medicaid coverage for certain low-income adults between 18 and 65 with incomes below 133% of the federal poverty level. Because the ACA includes a 5% income disregard, this measure would effectively expand Medicaid to those with incomes below 138% of the federal poverty level.

U.S. District Judge Charles Kornmann ruled Friday—Jan. 10—that a South Dakota law regarding ballot measure signature collection violated the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
