Friend, over the past two years, 36.1 million people across the Horn of Africa have suffered from one of the longest and most severe droughts in recent history – and now, following widespread crop failures, thousands have died of hunger in Somalia.
Even though a famine hasn’t been officially declared, the crisis in Somalia is incredibly dire. Some estimates say that as many people may end up starving during this food crisis as in an “official” famine. For over 50 years, UNFPA has been on the ground in Somalia working to provide women and girls with the resources needed to be safe, healthy, and empowered – but now at this critical moment we must expand our reach. That’s why we set an urgent goal to raise $20,000 before 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 31.
Two million women and girls are impacted by these conditions, and the consequences to their well-being are alarming.Over the course of the next few months, incidents of violence will increase, child marriage will become a more widespread coping mechanism for families struggling with poverty, and more than 380,000 women and girls will give birth without access to proper sexual and reproductive health services.
We still have time to change these outcomes. But not much.
That’s why we must raise $20,000 before January ends – the stakes are real and real lives hang in the balance. So please:
Your gift will deliver lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care to women and girls in more than 150 countries around the world. Thank you for being there for every woman and girl.
