[ [link removed] ]Prime Minister Netanyahu’s far-right government recently released
“judicial reform” plans that would have a massive impact on Israel’s
status as a democracy – and on its policies, politics and the rule of law
in the State of Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory. The plans
to radically weaken Israel’s judiciary – introduced by Justice Minister
Yariv Levin, and reportedly drawn up by the right-wing,
American-billionaire-backed Kohelet Policy Forum – include a provision
allowing a simple majority in the Israeli parliament to overrule and
supersede the Supreme Court. It has sparked outrage from prominent Israeli
politicians and the Supreme Court president, and a massive protest
movement in Israel, with over 100,000 taking to the streets so far. With
horrific, spiraling violence erupting between Israelis and Palestinians in
recent days, protest leaders have articulated concerns that the government
could take advantage of the unraveling security situation to distract from
its anti-democratic moves. The movement’s leaders are determined to press
on with the protests. To discuss the details of the Levin Plan, its
architects and origins, and the mass movement pushing back in defense of
democracy and the independent judiciary, please join us as we speak with
two Israeli experts for an important, timely and interactive J Stream
briefing. [ [link removed] ]This Event will take place on Wednesday, February 1 at 1 pm
