Friend,
The videos of Tyre Nichols’ brutal beating at the hands of police officers
sent shockwaves across the country after their release on Friday night.
It’s one of the countless stories of police violence and excessive use of
force we see every day, particularly toward people of color.
Tyre Nichols should be alive today. He faced inhuman and brutal violence.
We must change the standard for the use of force in America to be a “last
resort” as opposed to whatever an officer thinks is reasonable. That is
the standard in most other Western, liberal democracies.
[ [link removed] ]Sign if you agree: It’s time to prioritize de-escalation over excessive
force.
I’ve joined Senator Alex Padilla to introduce the PEACE Act, which would
change the federal standard for the use of force by federal officers. The
bill requires that force be used only when necessary to prevent imminent
death or serious bodily injury. While this measure was passed by the House
in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act last Congress, this is the
first time the bill has been introduced in the Senate.
Police officers are sworn to protect the communities they serve. Violence
has no justification unless there is truly no other choice.

In solidarity,
