The Purge: Election Year
-----------------------------------
As we enter the new year, there is no shortage of challenges awaiting Americans. Following a year in which President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans continually attempted-and occasionally succeeded-to pass deeply unpopular legislation that would be detrimental to the health <[link removed]> and financial security <[link removed]> of millions of Americans, it is clearer now more than ever that Americans' voices are not being heard by their elected officials. With this realization, millions of Americans will expect to be able to make their grievances known at the ballot box. Yet an incredibly important case lies before the Supreme Court this term, one that would prevent certain groups-particularly communities of color-from having their voices heard. On January 10, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute, et.al. <[link removed]>, a case that will determine whether states can purge individuals from voter rolls for simply failing to vote in previous elections. Voter purges are an insidious, often under-the-radar form of voter suppression, and they represent a growing threat to Americans' voting rights, potentially affecting election outcomes and endangering fair representation for all.
