Fox Richardson spent the last two decades campaigning for the release of her husband, Rob G. Richardson, who was serving a 60-year prison sentence for a robbery they both committed in the early 1990s in a moment of desperation. Their story is depicted in the Academy award-nominated documentary film, Time. Together, Fox and Rob Richardson just released their book, Time, which shares the rest of their riveting story including the faith that sustained them during their two decade imprisonment and the miracles that brought them and their family back together again.
Join Advancement Project at BusBoys and Poets (14th & V ST NW - Langston Room) on Feb 2 from 6-8:30pm for a partial screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Time" followed by a discussion with authors Fox and Rob moderated by Justice Project Director Liyah K. Time offers us an intimate account of mass incarceration's toll on one family and a celebration of the power of love. Unfortunately Fox and Rob's story is one of many families being separated by mass incarceration. Kids grow up without parents, spouses endure without better halves, and parents grow older without their children bearing witness.
There are over 2 million people behind bars, being held in state and federal prisons, local jails, youth detention, immigration detention facilities and Indian country jails as well as military prisons, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals and prisons in the U.S. territories.
Our criminal system confines people in facilities cruelly plagued with inhumane conditions. Our country needlessly relies on carceral punishment to respond to basic human needs and solve broader social issues. Our policies and laws continue to penalize people after they've served their sentence by putting limitations on their civil liberties and saddling them with unbearable debt, creating further barriers for people to hold and maintain jobs, housing, and the right to vote. All of which has served as a way to uphold the legacy of slavery for Black communities and further oppress poor people and other communities of color.
Fox and Rob's story is a reminder that this is simply no reforming this system. For all of us to live with dignity and thrive we do away carceral systems and address systemic issues so that our lives, our families, and our communities can be free.
Join us for an incredible film and discussion with Advancement Project and Fox and Rob Richardson Thursday, Feb 2 from 6-8:30pm at Busboys and Poets - 14th & V ST NW - Langston Room [[link removed]]
