The next several days calls for our weather pattern to change once again.? The freezing rain and icy conditions beginning later Monday (1/30) into Wednesday (2/1).

Although we only have a few cold snaps per season, it?s still necessary to protect exposed water pipes. Leaving pipes unprotected can cause them to burst, which can result in a tremendous amount of damage to the home and the contents inside.

You can drastically reduce your chance of property damage by preparing your water pipes before a hard freeze.

With the cold weather approaching, here are some freeze protection tips that will help you remember the 3 P?s (Pets, Plants, and Pipes):

Pets - Although your pets have a comfortable coat that helps keep them warm, it's just not enough when the temperature plummets. Make sure you bring your pets inside or provide them with a warm, dry shelter.?

Plants - Any potted plants that can be moved should be brought indoors. If you are unable to move your plants inside you can cover them, but don't use plastic! When the sun is up and shining on the plastic cover the heat can get trapped under the plastic and damage your plants. Try using old bed sheets instead.?

Pipes - Letting interior faucets drip in restrooms and kitchens can help prevent frozen or broken water lines. Cover outside faucet bibs and backflow preventers to prevent them from freezing and breaking. If temperatures dip below 20?, open cabinets below sink to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

Taking the above precautions will help ensure that your pets, plants, and pipes will be protected from the harsh conditions of winter.
