Dear NRDC Activist,
As I write this, the Interior Department is advancing plans for two huge offshore lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico this spring. Plus, the department is preparing to auction off more than 460,000 acres of public lands across Wyoming, Utah, and other Western states — and has signaled that more lease sales are on the horizon.
Why? The fossil fuel industry is powerful and sneaky. They buried a poison pill in the ambitious new climate law — the Inflation Reduction Act — that allows them to keep their “drill everywhere” agenda running strong.
We're in a rapidly worsening climate crisis, and 2023 is the year when we must tip the scales decisively toward bold climate-saving action. To do that, we need to hold our ground — right here, right now — and put an end to Big Oil’s destructive agenda. Can you help us?
Your support of this work is so crucial that the daughter of NRDC Founding President John Adams, Kate Adams, her husband Duke Wiser, and their family will TRIPLE MATCH your $5 donation up to a total of $330,000!
Help us fight against Big Oil, in and out of court, and defend our environment on every front. Hurry, this triple-match opportunity ends when the clock strikes midnight on January 31! Just $5 will have a huge impact!
When I say “poison pill”, I mean this: Big Oil’s powerful army of lobbyists successfully planted a “hostage” provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that prevents the Interior Department from approving new clean energy projects without also doling out more drilling leases to the oil and gas industry.
It’s appalling, but hardly surprising given the fossil fuel industry's greedy track record. They will stop at nothing to drive up their exorbitant profits. In fact, in just the third quarter last year, the three biggest U.S. oil companies — ExxonMobil, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips — hauled in a staggering $35.4 billion after taxes. That’s almost $400 million in profit every single day!
Meanwhile, burning fossil fuels unleashes a witch’s brew of toxic pollutants that kill an estimated 350,000 Americans every year and is linked to a growing list of chronic heart, lung, and brain illnesses. Plus, communities of color and low-income neighborhoods are being unjustly forced to bear a disproportionate share of that toxic burden.
Here’s how you can help: Donate $5 before midnight on January 31 and your tax-deductible gift will be 3x matched. We'll put it to work to stop Big Oil from forcing through more destructive drilling, end our dependence on climate-wrecking fossil fuels of the past, and defend our environment in the most effective way possible.
Your support will help NRDC as we work to prevent Big Oil from plundering more of our priceless public lands, fight a rapidly accelerating climate crisis, and stand with frontline communities against the heavily polluting dirty energy projects that threaten health, homes, and lives.
If we’re going to succeed at wrenching our energy future from the death grip of the fossil fuel industry, then we'll need your help with a triple matched gift today.
Thank you for your strong support.
Sincerely,
Josh Axelrod
