Trust for Public Land is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year—a milestone that is only possible because of your support and the dedication of our volunteers, staff, and partners.

We are so proud of the work we’ve accomplished! Here are just a few examples of the impact we’ve made together:

Chattahoochee RiverLands, Georgia

The Chattahoochee RiverLands is on track to become Georgia’s defining public space for generations to come, connecting millions of people with a vital natural resource. For more than 30 years, TPL has led the effort to protect the Chattahoochee as a public space, where residents and visitors can fish, hike, paddle, and enjoy Georgia’s most famous river. We’ve helped preserve more than 18,000 acres of land and 80 miles of riverfront for public use so far, and we’re actively working to create an additional 100 miles of trails and parks along the river corridor.

Kashia Coastal Reserve, California

This piece of land on Northern California’s legendary coastline is etched with dense redwood forest, towering coastal bluffs and waterfalls, and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Perched along the coast, the reserve was the ancestral home of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians until the tribe was forced inland 150 years ago. Ultimately settling on a small, water-poor reservation, the Kashia lost all but 40 acres of their ancestral lands. In 2015, TPL purchased the privately held land and returned it to the Kashia. The Kashia Coastal Reserve now protects important cultural sites and provides a place to connect present and future generations of the Kashia with their heritage.

Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Saguaro National Park, adjacent to the city of Tucson, has over a million visitors each year. In addition to protecting the beautiful landscape of the Sonoran Desert, including large forests of its namesake saguaro cacti, the park provides visitors with over 190 miles of trails—a popular outdoor destination for both residents and tourists from around the world. Since 1993, TPL has protected over 2,237 acres in and around Saguaro National Park, improving access and connectivity to Tucson’s big backyard.

The 606, Illinois

Opened in 2015, The 606 is an innovative project on Chicago’s Northwest side that has transformed nearly 3 miles of unused rail line into the elevated Bloomingdale Trail. The park and trail system includes trails set above city streets for use by bikers, runners, and walkers; four access parks at the ground level; art installations and event spaces; alternative transportation avenues; and green, open space for Chicagoans from all neighborhoods to enjoy. Named for the 606 zip code prefix all Chicagoans share, The 606 connects parks, people, and communities.

Zion National Park, Utah

From massive sandstone cliffs to slim, sheer canyons and high-altitude forests, Zion National Park encompasses some of the most outstanding landscapes in the United States—or anywhere. But many visitors don’t realize that parts of this wild, beloved national park are at risk of development. These areas of private property can impact trail access, wildfire management, views, water quality, and wildlife habitat—not to mention interrupting your hike. TPL has been working since 2000 to help ensure access to the park’s stunning backcountry, including places such as the Zion Narrows Trail, Hop Valley, Tabernacle Dome, and Orderville Gulch.
