In a petty and wildly partisan move, MAGA Republicans, led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, are planning to hold a vote of the full U.S. House -- possibly as soon as tomorrow -- to kick progressive Democrat Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Here’s the thing: We may have the votes to block it.

Three Republican Representatives have already come out opposed. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said Friday it would be hypocritical for Republicans to boot Omar. She even called it "cancel culture." Reps. Victoria Spartz from Indiana and Ken Buck from Colorado have joined her. Spartz said “I will not support this charade again.”^[1]

If one more Republican House member flips against Speaker McCarthy, MAGA Republicans will lose this fight and Ilhan Omar will keep her seat on this important committee.

Let’s be clear about what’s at stake here.

MAGA Republicans want Omar off the committee not because of what she has said before. If they cared about what elected leaders say, they wouldn’t be MAGA Republicans.

The truth is they want her off because of what she does and who she is. A founding member of the Squad, Omar is a progressive champion in Congress. She’s been a fierce defender of human rights and democracy and a champion of humanitarian aid during her tenure, leading efforts to block arms sales to human rights abusers, protect refugees, and ensure that diplomacy and partnership replace war as our primary means of engaging the world.

She also brings unparalleled lived experience to the committee as a Somali-born refugee, and is the first ever African-born member to sit on the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights in the history of the United States.

It doesn’t matter that Republicans ran on reducing inflation and crime, evidently removing a powerful Black woman from committee assignments in retaliation for the last Congress's BIPARTISAN votes to remove insurrectionists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from their committees is much more important.

McCarthy can’t remove Omar unilaterally. He needs to win a majority vote of the whole House to get it done. So as long as every Democrat holds the line and at least 4 Republicans join them -- both of which are far from guaranteed -- we can stop this petty MAGA plan now. That’s why it’s critical you send a direct message to your House Representative immediately.
