Mitch McConnell was forced to announce this week that he didn’t have the votes in the Senate for the outright dismissal of charges against Trump. But just like in Brett Kavanagh’s confirmation hearings, we can expect that Republicans currently calling for a full trial like Susan Collins to waver as soon as McConnell’s given them enough political cover.
