Lanetta Haynes Turner gets choked up when she talks about family.
 
Turner, 45, the chief of staff for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, is emotional when recalling her childhood growing up in the Illinois foster care system.
 
“My mother was the type that would disappear … so my grandmother, aunts and uncles would step in and keep us,” she said.

Applications are now open for programs that promote economic development, public services and transportation improvements throughout the County
 
The Cook County Board of Commissioners and President Toni Preckwinkle announced a call for applications for the Department of Transportation and Highway’s (DoTH) “Invest in Cook” grant program to assist communities with transportation infrastructure improvements.
 
In conjunction, the Bureau of Economic Development (BED) is also accepting Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) applications to support economic development in the County through capital improvement, public service and Emergency Solution Grant (ESG) programs.
 
“Making investments in transportation and economic development projects throughout Cook County is essential,” said President Preckwinkle.
 
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the vaccines currently available in the United States are more than 90% effective at preventing COVID-19. Getting vaccinated will protect yourself and those around you and will help keep your community healthy.
