An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

John,

This is a historic moment for our country: President Trump is finally being held accountable for his shocking abuses of power. Senators have been sworn in for his impeachment trial, taking a solemn oath to “do impartial justice.”

Every single senator should take that oath seriously and conduct a fair and impartial trial; each one should seriously consider President Trump’s removal from office as the correct response to his abuses of power.

Ahead of Tuesday, when the trial will begin in earnest, here are some important things to note:

  • Since December 18, when the House impeached President Trump, we’ve learned of even more evidence of his serious abuses of power. Just this week, the House released documents from Rudy Giuliani’s associate Lev Parnas that contain devastating evidence of President Trump’s knowledge of and involvement in pressuring Ukraine’s president. Now it’s even more obvious that the only goal of the scheme was to damage Trump’s political opponent.
  • This new evidence makes it clear that witness testimony is needed to conduct a thorough trial. History is on our side: witness testimony has also been a part of every single completed impeachment trial in Senate history. President Trump’s trial should be no exception.
  • As senators consider the overwhelming evidence that President Trump obstructed Congress’ efforts to investigate the Ukraine scandal, they should also remember that this is part of a pattern: he has repeatedly blocked and undermined Congressional investigations and oversight. Read my op-ed about the need to consider Trump’s pattern of obstruction in USA Today.

We’ll be sending regular updates as the impeachment trial continues, providing you with resources and information about what’s going on, what’s at stake, and what you can do about it.

President Trump’s corruption and abuses of power have damaged our democracy—there’s no question about that. But by fighting back and working to hold him accountable, we can ensure that the future of our democracy is protected, from whatever lies in store.

Thank you,
