GRASSROOTS AMICUS BRIEF:
Amicus briefs are called “friend of the court” briefs―they’re a way for groups who aren’t immediately party to a case under consideration to make their own arguments without appearing in court themselves. Usually, they’re created by fancy think tanks, but because student debt relief affects millions of people who aren’t a part of these fancy think tanks, so we’re doing things differently.

John,
The Supreme Court has overturned decades of precedent recently, as Justices appointed by Presidents who lost the popular vote work to repeal the 20th century.
The latest text comes next month, when the Court hears arguments about blocking President Biden’s student debt relief plan―one that’s plainly legal, but opposed by right-wingers.
Student debt isn’t just a young person’s problem. Tens of thousands of retirees have their Social Security checks garnished to recoup student loan debt. And that number will only grow as today’s graduates age, since college is much more expensive than it once was.
Our friends at Rise are organizing a grassroots amicus brief in support of President Biden’s plan. They will deliver it to the Supreme Court before the oral arguments begin. Can you sign on today?
President Biden’s plan to provide student debt relief was celebrated across generations―but just after the election, Republican-appointed judges blocked the relief from taking effect. The plan is plainly legal―but that doesn’t stop these politicians in robes from spitting in the eye of people caught in the student debt trap.
Higher education is a public good―just like retirement. Our government shouldn’t punish people for pursuing it. And activist judges shouldn’t stop the president from executive action to help people.
