LULAC SAYS TYRE NICHOLS VIDEO DEMANDS GOOD COPS STOP BAD COPS WHEN THEY SEE ABUSE
OF POWER AGAINST CIVILIANS
=================================================================================

Nation's Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization Calls for the FBI
and the U.S. Department of Justice to Begin A New Era of Police Training To Stop
Police Abusive Violence
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the
following statement in the wake of the video released [ [link removed] ]
by the Memphis, Tennessee Police Department in the death of 29-year-old Tyre
Nichols. The video was made public after five black police officers were fired
and charged with murder for the fatal beating captured on camera. Nichols died
several days later. (Warning: The video images are graphic and disturbing.)

"LULAC stands with the family of Tyre Nichols in calling for peaceful and
non-violent demonstrations for justice," says Domingo García, LULAC National
President. "As important, we say to every good police officer out there, who we
believe are the majority, when you see a bad cop committing abuse of power in the
field, intervene and stop them. Report them! To police chiefs, LULAC says, take
this as a wake-up call and step up your training in the academies to better teach
officers how to de-escalate incidents involving your force. Also, move to remove
officers with histories of misconduct,” he adds.

Garcia says LULAC will ask the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice to
implement new law enforcement standards and make local police anti-abuse training
a national priority. "America has no room for beatings or killings of civilians
at the hands of bad cops wearing a badge. These incidents cannot be the new
normal of law enforcement in our country. LULAC will not tolerate it," said
Garcia.
