Voter ID laws. Voter roll purges. Felony disenfranchisement.

These tools are the hallmark of modern-day voter suppression. They are the strategies states are already employing to ensure Black and Brown people don’t vote in 2020. These tactics are a part of our nation’s continuous assault on the voting rights of communities of color.

This year, like every year, we are committed to helping voters of color fight back. And we’re kicking off our #2020VotingRights work with a win and a bang!

First, the win! On Tuesday, our team won a major legal victory against Missouri’s restrictive voter ID law. In a 5-2 decision, the state’s Supreme Court ruled that election officials can no longer demand voters present a photo ID to vote in Missouri. In prior elections, voters who presented ID without a photo were forced to cast provisional ballots or sign a document legally attesting to their lack of an approved photo ID. We know this victory will increase access to the ballot in this year’s elections. Read our statement on the win and how it will impact voters statewide.

The bang. We’re also kicking off 2020 by celebrating the release of Uncounted: The Crisis of Voter Suppression in the United States. Coined as “crucial reading in advance of the 2020 presidential election,” Uncounted is the seminal work of Gilda Daniels, University of Baltimore law professor and Litigation Director of Advancement Project National Office.

Join us January 28 at Busboys and Poets in Washington D.C. for a special author conversation and book launch reception!

Daniels will deliver a call to action and a plan on how communities can successfully combat voter suppression ahead of the 2020 elections.

We know our voter protection work is just beginning. We cannot stop now.
