*Potential demonstrations this weekend:?Prepare for possible travel disruptions*?

Today, officials in Memphis released the video showing the arrest and death of Tyre Nichols. King County Metro is encouraging riders to?sign up for transit alerts [ [link removed] ]?and monitor reports if the video leads to community demonstrations that affect bus, streetcar and Access paratransit service.

If demonstrations temporarily close a street, buses might be rerouted or pause in place until streets reopen. Riders should allow additional travel time to account for potential delays, or opt to ride Sound Transit Link 1 Line through downtown Seattle if surface streets are temporarily affected by demonstrations.

Before traveling, riders are encouraged to;

Expanded bus lane hours to help improve transit reliability along 15th Avenue West, Elliott Avenue West
Picture of the back of a RapidRide D line that is pulled over to the side of the road with a bunch of signs and buildings in the background

The Interbay corridor is one of the busiest travel areas in Seattle, connecting downtown Seattle with Ballard and Magnolia along 15th Avenue West and Elliott Avenue West. Currently, an average of 11,353 people ride the bus routes on this corridor each weekday.

Metro service that travels in Interbay ?*?Routes 24, 32, 33 and the RapidRide D Line* ?? can?reduce their time stuck in traffic by using bus-only lanes during peak commuting periods. Done in collaboration with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), the Business Access and Transit?(BAT) lanes restrict access to buses to increase reliability for riders. These BAT lanes allow people driving and other vehicles to enter the lane to make right turns at intersections or to turn into driveways.

The bus access lane hours on 15th Avenue West and Elliott Avenue West, between West Armour Street and West Mercer Place/West Roy Street in both directions have been extended to 7-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

?I love my job? Tonya Abernathy on the joys and challenges of being a bus operator

Recognized by her riders with commendations and by her peers as an?Operator of the Month [ [link removed] ], Tonya Abernathy knows that life behind the wheel can be both stressful and fulfilling. She also understands the challenges of being a female transit operator in a field that remains predominately male.

Close up pic of the front of the bus with Tonya proudly standing in front with a big smile and her arms crossed in a floral shirt

Tonya, who was encouraged by her sister to apply at Metro because of her great communication and people skills, recently discussed with StreetsBlog USA??What It?s Like to Be a Woman Transit Operator.? [ [link removed] ]?Tonya, who was a security officer at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas before joining Metro, talks about security, ?safety and handling ?negative energy? both on and off buses. She also discusses the self-care she takes and the rewards of being a transit operator.

Tonya never forgets that it?s about the people who ride with her every day: ?When passengers come up to me and say, thank you for your service ? ?it makes me feel like I?m in the military!?

RapidRide H Line construction update (January 2023)
Front of RapidRide H Line bus

Construction teams will begin striping new Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes in White Center and Burien as soon as later this month, weather permitting.

BAT lanes are curbside lanes used only by right-turning vehicles and buses. They help buses move more efficiently through traffic and provide better access to businesses. BAT lanes will be installed along 16th Ave SW between SW 107th St and SW 116th St, and on Ambaum Blvd SW between SW 128th St. and SW 148th St. Some lane closures and detours will be in place during this work.

Construction on the RapidRide H Line project began in June 2021 and is expected to last through March 2023. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some nighttime and weekend work.
