Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat on the Death of Tyre Nichols

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement on the death of Tyre Nichols:

"If we’re going to make real systemic change in this country, we must fully confront the realities of our criminal justice system. My heart breaks for the Nichols family. No family should ever have to endure this pain and suffering, but unfortunately, far too many here in the U.S. have," said Espaillat. "The behavior of these officers was undoubtedly repulsive and inhumane, and I commend the Memphis authorities for their swift actions to ensure full transparency and accountability in this case. We come together at this difficult time to embrace the Nichols family and ask for healing and peace following this tragedy."

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his fourth term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), where he serves as Deputy Chair and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where he serves as Deputy Whip.
