Team,
We emailed you recently about the importance of majorities. The past week in Michigan has shown just how critical they are to progress.
It’s been a busy week in Michigan. On Wednesday, Governor Whitmer held the annual State of the State address. It was the first in-person address since COVID, and the first in decades with a Democratic Governor and legislature.
There were a few priorities mentioned in the speech that I’m particularly excited about. First, a renewed push for safe gun storage, specifically a bill Senator Rosemary Bayer introduced last term that was the state companion to my Safe Guns, Safe Kids bill.
The Governor also laid out steps to repeal the 1931 law on Michigan’s books outlawing abortion, and expand protections for LGBTQ individuals through the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. It’s not only the right thing to do-- it should also attract young talent to Michigan.
Because we have a Democratic majority in the state legislature, they were able to immediately get to work. Yesterday, they moved bills through that will expand the earned income tax credit, move our presidential primary up to February 27th of 2024, repeal the retirement tax impacting Michigan’s seniors, and provide funding for business incentives.
I’ve been saying for months that Michigan needs to be the blueprint for lawmakers across the country. After the overturning of Roe, we had a plan to get protections on our ballots. On Election Day, we defied national expectations and elected a Democratic legislative majority in the process. And now, we’re taking those wins and putting them into action.
But, we can’t stop building on the progress we’ve made the last few years. Chip in below to help me solidify Michigan as the blueprint for progress. [[link removed]]
