John,
I just wrapped up my first week in office as your 63rd Governor of Maryland, and like Aruna and I promised, we got right to work on Day 1.
Last Thursday, my first order of business was issuing an executive order to establish the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation, home of the Service Year Option. Going forward, high school graduates will have the opportunity to serve their communities and their state, be paid for their work, and learn skills that will serve them in their futures. Maryland will lead, and we will lead with service.
I also announced the release of $69 million in funding that was previously approved by the General Assembly but withheld by the former governor.
This includes:
- $9 million for action on climate change and conservation
- $10 million for paid family and medical leave
- $46.5 million for cannabis reform
- $3.5 million to for abortion care access
These investments will impact every community in Maryland, and demonstrate our administration’s willingness to work with the General Assembly to provide bold solutions to the issues facing Marylanders.
We also released our first preliminary budget for fiscal year 2024, making historic investments in education, transportation improvements, public safety reform, healthcare expansion, and environmental protection.
Through this budget, we aim to be bold without being reckless: it prepares us to weather changes in the national economy and makes historic investments to position us for our future growth and make this next decade Maryland’s decade.
These are big moves to ensure that Maryland is a state where we leave no one behind, and we’re just getting started!
Thank you for trusting me and Aruna to lead our beloved state forward. We’ll be in touch with more updates as we continue to deliver for you, the people.
Elevate,
Wes
