NYC Councilwoman Sandy Nurse, the NYIC's Executive Director Murad Awawdeh, and NYIC members gather at City Hall to demand more from Mayor Adams' austerity budget.
Tell Mayor Adams to Stop Scapegoating Immigrants Now! ([link removed])
John,
For the past two months, Mayor Adams has been scapegoating immigrant communities and in yesterday’s State of the City address ([link removed]) address he completely excluded our communities from his vision for New York City. Mayor Adams continues to shirk his responsibilities and point fingers at the federal government to assist recently arrived asylum seekers who now call New York City home. Meanwhile, Congress has already allocated $800 million to cities like New York for the integration of asylum seekers, and New York City is expecting a surplus of over $2 billion this fiscal year, according to the New York City Independent Budget Office ([link removed]) and New York State Comptroller DiNapoli
([link removed]) .
Immigrant New Yorkers have contributed too much to this city throughout history let alone during this pandemic to be rendered invisible by the Mayor. Instead of investing adequate funds and resources towards the services and infrastructures that will improve the quality of life of every New Yorker, Mayor Adams is grandstanding on the Southern border for the media while making cuts to key services here at home.
Immigrant New Yorkers demand more from this city budget — we need to:
* Meet the current moment by supporting our newest arrivals as they pursue their asylum cases and traverse our complex immigration system by increasing investments in immigration legal service programs like ActionNYC and the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP).
* Hire the full complement of commensurately paid social workers needed in our public school system to support the needs of every New York student, and give them a fighting chance to fully recover from the hardships of the last two years.
* Renew all New York City Adult Literacy Education baselined funding to address the immense, inequitable gap in digital literacy, systems navigation skills and access to information.
* House our unhoused neighbors who have been stuck in temporary shelter for over 2-3 years and support them into permanent housing with programs like CityFEPS, and expand eligibility to include all New Yorkers regardless of their immigration status.
Everyday New Yorkers have continued to meet the moment throughout this past year, welcoming asylum seekers with open arms and showcasing the best of what our city has to offer. Mayor Adams must follow the lead of his constituents and invest in our city’s newest arrivals and longtime immigrant New Yorkers in this year’s budget, uplifting New York’s values and future instead of stoking division with false facts and fake news.
Immigrants, asylum seekers and all New Yorkers deserve more from this administration.
Tell Mayor Adams to Stop Scapegoating Immigrants Now! ([link removed])
In solidarity,
Murad Awawdeh
Executive Director
