Local elected officials are the backbone of our government. Not only are they the folks who decide to put up stop signs and build new roads, but they also have the potential to run for higher office.

Before he was the Junior Senator from Virginia, before he was governor or Lt. governor, Tim Kaine was a city council member and mayor of Richmond. Many members of Congress and the General Assembly served on county boards and town councils.
