Now that the Republican House is kicking off their agenda, it’s no surprise that their first item of business is an attempt to cripple the IRS by defunding its efforts to ensure millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share of taxes.
This is standard procedure for the Republicans, who have cut 20% of the IRS budget in the last 13 years.
These cuts work to protect the super-rich and tax cheats like Donald Trump -- as audits of the wealthiest have dropped precipitously with the lack of proper IRS funding. Meanwhile, IRS cuts increase the number of audits for the non-rich (with much less complicated tax returns and no lawyers to defend them) and delay the processing of tax returns and refunds for everyone.
The MAGA House can pass whatever bills they want, but the Senate must stop these bills from becoming law.
Since many Senators are millionaires, the only way to ensure they’ll do the right thing is to make sure they feel public pressure. Sign on and tell the Senate to reject the Republican plan to defund the IRS now.
The statistics speak for themselves. Due to previous cuts to the IRS budget, since 2010 the top 1% have avoided paying $160 billion in taxes annually.
Audits have decreased by a whopping 71% for millionaires and billionaires and 54% for corporations.
Last year Democrats took a huge step forward in fixing this and passed the Inflation Reduction Act which includes $8 billion annually for the IRS over the next 10 years. It is estimated that this critical funding will raise over $200 billion in taxes.
If the MAGA plan goes through, crucial programs to help working families afford healthcare and childcare will be off the table, while ultra-wealthy tax cheats will be let off the hook for paying what they owe.
It’s unacceptable. Democrats got it right last year and restored greater fairness to the American people by proposing plans to tax the rich. Now we have to stop MAGA Republicans from sabotaging that effort and protecting their corporate patrons. Please add your name now!
We can hold ultra-wealthy criminal tax cheats like Donald Trump accountable and finally make them pay what they owe in taxes, but not if MAGA Republicans get their way.
