Earlier this week, during a visit to our Benning Road/Minnesota Avenue Family Success Center, we kicked off tax season by reminding residents of the credits and programs you can use to put money back in your pockets this year.?
We specifically want to make sure DC residents know about the federal and DC Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). By claiming these two credits, qualified workers are eligible for up to $9,000 combined?? that's a lot of money! If you earn less than?$60,000, you should check to see if you are eligible (learn more about the federal EITC HERE and the DC EITC HERE). People with and without children are eligible for these credits.?
There are also other ways to save money and get money back during tax season. For example, several years ago, we created and then made permanent the Keep Child Care Affordable Tax Credit to make child care more affordable for District families. The credit is available to taxpayers based on the amount of eligible child care expenses you paid.
Before doing your taxes this year, I encourage you to take time to research the credits you are eligible for and to take advantage of free tax clinics.
Every year, millions of dollars go unclaimed during tax season?? make sure you don't leave any money on the table.

 Applications for the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program will open on Monday, January 30, 2023, at 12:00 p.m.
District youth between the ages of 14 to 24 are encouraged to apply online at?summer.dc.gov.?Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, February 28. Employers who want to host participants are also encouraged to reach out through summer.dc.gov.?
Young people will participate in six weeks of paid work experience through subsidized placements in the private and public sectors. Orientation for the program begins on Monday, June 26 and the program ends on Friday, August 4.

 This week, the DC Public Library opened a new exhibit to the public: Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See.?The exhibit, which will be showcased in seven cities across the country, shares the story of how a mother?s bravery and fight for justice more than six decades ago fueled the civil rights movement. The exhibit also provides a framework for people and communities committed to advocacy and racial healing.

 The Department of Public Works (DPW) Food Waste Drop-Off Program allows residents to drop off food waste for composting year-round at 10 drop-off locations across DC. This spring, DPW will be expanding the program by adding two additional sites. Current Food Waste Drop-Off sites are co-located with farmers' markets; these two new sites could be co-located at a community garden, on a college campus, in a church parking lot, or anywhere people frequently congregate.
DPW is now hiring people to establish, manage, and staff the new sites. All members of the public are encouraged to apply, including community members, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, businesses, and more.
Interested applicants should apply HERE by January 31, 2023.
