Ambassador Katherine Tai Visits
New Dems at Weekly Member Meeting

This week, New Dems welcomed U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai to our weekly Member meeting! New Dems had a productive conversation with the Ambassador about advancing our trade agenda that promotes American values, workers, and economic growth.

Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04) toured an electric vehicle charging facility creating good-paying jobs in his district. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, companies like SemaConnect and Blink are able to produce EV chargers and place them throughout the country.

Rep. Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) received praise from local leaders at her in-district swearing-in ceremony. Rev. Courtney Carson, a local pastor and educator, hailed Nikki's victory as a win for labor, education, and for women all across America.

Reps. Derek Kilmer (WA-06) and Marilyn Strickland (WA-10), Co-Chairs of the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, held a press conference in Tacoma, WA to celebrate their new law, the PUGET SOS Act, which was signed into law by President Biden in December as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2023. This new law aims to enhance the federal government’s role and investment in Puget Sound, the nation’s largest estuary by volume and the heart of Washington State’s identity and economic engine.

Rep. Julia Brownley (CA-26) presented a check for $640,000 to the County of Ventura to expand crime victim services and resources in Oxnard and Port Hueneme. These funds will help expand the Ventura County Family Justice Center, a program administered by the Ventura County DAs Office, at a new location in Oxnard.

Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-07) kicked off the first District Work Period of the 118th Congress. McBath met with local elected officials, a non-profit supporting the Latino community in Gwinnett County, and Gwinnett's Chamber of Commerce to discuss their federal priorities for the year ahead and to receive updates on projects of significance in the county.

Rep. Julia Brownley (CA-26) introduced a legislative package of three bills to further advance her work to expand and improve health care for our nation’s veterans. The bills include H.R. 542 ([link removed]) , the Elizabeth Dole Home- and Community-Based Services for Veterans and Caregivers Act of 2023, H.R. 543 ([link removed]) , the Department of Veterans Affairs Continuing Professional Education Modernization Act, and H.R. 544 ([link removed]) , the Veterans Infertility Treatment Act of 2023.

Connolly Reintroduces Bipartisan Legislation to Defend Ukraine's Territorial Integrity ([link removed])
Rep. Gerry Connolly (VA-11) introduced H.R. 535 ([link removed]) , the Defending Ukrainian Territorial Integrity Act, that would codify America's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian military action and potential referenda. This bill would prohibit the U.S. from recognizing any potential referenda in Russian-occupied, sovereign Ukrainian territory.

DelBene, Kilmer Offer Amendment to Protect Pacific Northwest from Offshore Drilling ([link removed])
Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Derek Kilmer (WA-06) offered an amendment to H.R. 21 ([link removed]) , the Republican-led Strategic Production Response Act, legislation considered this week in the House that would protect the Pacific Northwest from offshore oil drilling.

Pappas Reintroduces Bipartisan Legislation to Combat Fentanyl Trafficking ([link removed])
Rep. Chris Pappas (NH-01) reintroduced H.R. 568 ([link removed]) , the Save Americans from the Fentanyl Emergency (SAFE) Act to permanently schedule fentanyl analogues as Schedule I substances. This bipartisan legislation was introduced last Congress and will ensure law enforcement retains an important tool to keep our communities safe and hold traffickers accountable for the harm they have caused.
