I wanted to provide you an update regarding the beach erosion in Dare County and a potential beach nourishment program. I have been to Rodanthe to see this issue firsthand. After checking with USACE, I have been informed there is no beach nourishment project planned. Additionally, neither I nor the USACE have received any requests for permits or funding from Dare County to perform a beach nourishment project. The issue is that this is not a ‘one-and-done’ fix. Even if federal funds are tracked down for a multi-million-dollar project, the expectation is that it would not be a lasting solution. For this reason, I am awaiting the results of the Dare County feasibility study to determine the most efficient solution going forward.
Lastly, let me take a moment to highlight a young man in Eastern North Carolina who has gone above and beyond representing our community. Young Marine Sergeant Major Drache Gooch - a junior at White Oak High School - is moving on in a competition for the national Young Marine of the Year title. The organization is divided into six divisions across the United States, and Gooch beat out other Division 2 contestants from across Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, and West Virginia. I have supported the Young Marines program during my entire time in Congress and am immensely proud of this young man's performance. Read more on his story here!
