A worrying trend is emerging in the Bering Sea: as a result of climate change, the supply and timing of available food are shifting—and seabirds like Tufted Puffins are washing up on beaches along the coast, emaciated and starved.

Arctic seabirds’ inability to find enough food in warming ocean waters is just one sign of significant changes in the polar region, where the climate is being transformed faster than anywhere else on Earth. And they’re depending on us to act now to protect them and their habitat for years to come. The sad reality of climate change:

Seabirds must work harder for fish that travel deeper and further offshore to colder, more productive waters.

Food chains collapse due to ocean acidification.

Nests are destroyed by rising sea levels.

 

The last seven years are collectively the warmest seven years on record. And data shows us that as the world continues to warm, two-thirds of North American birds could be at risk of extinction from climate change. Changes are happening in the Arctic so quickly that many species are already struggling just to find the food they need to survive.

In this challenging time, birds need you more than ever.

With your critical support, Audubon will defend birds and the places they need through a powerful combination of research, advocacy, education, and direct conservation action. We’re already making meaningful strides to protect birds, like building champions in Congress who will update the Magnuson Stevens Act, our primary federal fisheries law, to ensure seabirds around the country have plenty of fish to eat.
