Republicans like to pretend that they care about the economy, but if we don’t raise the debt ceiling — and default on our debt — we could quickly find ourselves in a recession.

Kevin McCarthy made a lot of concessions to right-wing holdouts in order to become speaker, and we cannot allow these extremists to trigger an economic crisis. This Republican majority is not what the American people signed up for.

Usually a routine task for Congress, the debt limit has been raised 78 times since 1960. But when Tea Party Republicans politicized the debt ceiling in 2011 and refused to raise it, our nation’s credit rating dropped for the first time. And now that Republicans control the House again, our economy is once again on the line.
