On Friday, I had the pleasure of announcing $2 million in new federal funding that I secured for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dundee Township’s (BGCDT) new Woodlands Impact Center, which will provide critical services to under-served middle and high school students during afterschool and summer programs. The Impact Center will provide academic support, career and counseling services, and mentoring, with services aimed at improving opportunities for young people to become more involved in STEM-related career pathways, including through career and technical education. I was also happy to be joined by local and state officials, local business leaders, and representatives from AmeriCorps and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration from the Department of Commerce to encourage more youth participation in STEM fields through the Department of Education’s #YOUBelonginStem initiative.
In addition to STEM-related programs, the funding I secured for the BGCDT will enable current afterschool and summer programs to continue, allowing students to grow and learn as they prepare to take their next steps in their career and life. Since its founding in 1997, BGCDT has become one of our community’s top afterschool youth centers, helping more than 2,000 students per year reach their goals and potential along the way.
