Friend,

Our team has spent the past year diligently assessing voting records, bills, and actions from state leaders to create our 2022 California Environmental Scorecard.

We’ve been specifically looking at the political will and ambition of the State Legislature and Governor to move on major climate policy. The result was a resurgent A- grade for California — a massive increase from 2021’s dismal 67% score!

So how, and why, did we award California an A-?

How? California’s Score is a measure of how the state did overall on advancing climate and environmental policy through relevant legislation (we tracked 55 total environmental bills), the state budget, regulatory actions, and the electoral process (Prop 30, a critical ballot measure, did not pass).

Why? We’ve got a video for that, friend! We have a TON of meaningful climate accomplishments to celebrate from 2022. Watch our video to find out why California earned an A- Scorecard grade → [link removed]

Thanks for being with us.

Friend, 2022 wasn’t just a landmark year for climate in California.

Coming on the heels of years marked by delay and inaction, 2022 was a climate comeback year.

Today is the official release of our annual California Environmental Scorecard, and we have awarded California an A- grade for its unprecedented year of climate leadership.

Let me back up, friend.

For 50 years, EnviroVoters has been releasing a California Environmental Scorecard, which grades every single state legislator and the Governor on their environmental actions from the past year. (Read how we calculate scores here.)

Last year, we gave California a D for the first time. So that makes me even more thrilled that California had a resurgent year that improved its score from 67% to 91%!

There are too many 2022 wins to elaborate on here, from the massive budget investments in clean energy and natural resources to transformative policies like accelerated carbon neutrality goals and first-in-the-world, single-use packaging regulation.

So for now, what I’ll say is that we should all be energized by the vision and focus of our state leaders and their courage in taking on corporate polluters. Nationally and statewide, in 2022 leaders proved that our governments are capable of the big change necessary to solve the climate crisis.

But we can’t get complacent; we must take the momentum of 2022 and build on it every single year.

Because if California can sustain this climate courage in future years, we can create the global roadmap to solving the climate crisis and advance justice.

The Scorecard is a powerful educational resource for transparency and accountability. To calculate the California score, we tracked the outcome of 55 (!!!) total environmental bills that were introduced in 2022. And you can look up every state legislator to see how they fared in 2022 and whether they accepted oil money (nearly 2/3 of legislators did!).
