Coalition Community Update

Extra SNAP (Emergency Allotments) Ending

As we previously reported, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 was signed into law. One of the most impactful provisions in this bill for our work at the Coalition is the premature ending of Emergency Allotments (EAs), the extra SNAP payments that people receive in the second half of the month. The final EA payment will be distributed in February 2023Starting in March, families will only receive their regular SNAP payment in the first half of the month.

% of survey respondents running out of food

EAs Have Been a Lifeline to Families: A new survey of SNAP participants who use the Providers App to check their benefits and transactions, underscores the importance of EAs. Users reported visiting food pantries, skipping meals, and needing to rely on others for food more often in states where EAs have already ended.

Help Spread the Word: Before EAs end, we need your help making sure everyone knows that this change is coming. We have a flyer explaining this change, which has now been translated into Spanish. Please share this information widely throughout your communities!

Food Pantry & Soup Kitchens

Jean Kennerly

Philadelphia hunger fighters lost a dear friend and advocate on Monday, January 9th, when Jean Kennerly, soup kitchen director of Haven Peniel United Methodist Church passed. Ms. Kennerly was known affectionately by many who knew her as “Mom” Kennerly and community members who visited her North Philadelphia weekly knew and loved the hot meals she served with care and compassion.  She was a Coalition Against Hunger VIP (Victory in Partnership) member since the early 2000’s and introduced her daughters to nourishing their neighbors — work that they will continue to do.

To read more about Ms. Kennerly and how her family made fighting hunger in their community their family’s mission, please see this interview we did with them a few years ago.
