Last year during my State of the State address, I called on members of the Kansas legislature to put aside partisan differences and join forces to fight for our students, working families, and economy -- and we accomplished so much. The last twelve months were monumental for Kansas, take a look at just a few of the things we accomplished:
We added 12,400 private-sector jobs, reaching new employment records and creating the lowest unemployment rate in 40 years;
We fully funded our schools;
We reinvested in public safety; and
We stabilized our foster care system
We have so many reasons to be hopeful tonight. But make no mistake: one year of progress cannot erase a decade of damage from the previous administration. I'm so proud of everything we accomplished in 2019, but that doesn't mean we can become complacent in 2020.
I know we can join together again this year to focus on rebuilding our state where we need it most -- from expanding KanCare to developing a comprehensive transportation plan to rebuild our roads and bridges to leading the discussion on criminal justice reform.
