January updates across the FoundationMedia Freedom:Legal guide on laws relating to “fake news” in Russia translated into two new languages Last year, our global pro bono service, TrustLaw, launched a legal guide to help journalists and newsrooms understand the new laws relating to “fake news” in Russia, and how they’ve been applied to local and international press. We are pleased to announce that this resource is now available in Russian and Ukrainian, making it more accessible to journalists around the world. Inclusive Economies:Indian tech firm Byju’s summoned by watchdog over Context expose Last month, Context published a two-part investigation into the business practices of leading Indian education technology company Byju’s, uncovering harsh working conditions and the mistreatment of customers. In response to this expose – which revealed employees being made to work long hours under threat and aggressive sales tactics targeted at vulnerable and low-income families – the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued summons highlighting the company’s malpractices. This is believed to be the first such notice issued to an edtech company in India over its sales practices.
