Did you know that the beautiful Bengal tiger’s home is the Sundarabans, the largest mangrove forest in the world? Mangroves are tropical coastal forests that are known for their intricate roots that appear above ground as well as their biodiversity and importance to local communities. With the current increase in deforestation, climate change, and sea level rise, mangrove forests are deteriorating, taking away resources from locals and destroying the habitat of multiple endangered species such as the Bengal tiger. 

To help strengthen areas such as the mangrove ecosystems, EARTHDAY.‍ORG’s The Canopy Project collaborates with partners from around the world to reforest and rehabilitate the habitats and the communities most affected by environmental degradation. In the last year, EARTHDAY‍.ORG is working in villages both in Bangladesh and India to restore the mangrove forests and support the communities whose livelihoods depend on the trees and its resources.

In Bangladesh, the local fishermen rely on the supply of fish, crabs, and shellfish provided by the forest waters to sustain the fishing industry and their income. In one such project, 100,000 saplings will be planted that will not only restore the mangroves, but bind the soils allowing for easy boat launching, increased marine life, and direct benefits to the local community and economy.¹

Right next door, in a disaster-prone region of India, the mangroves act as a natural coastal defense, but as mangroves have decreased, the local population and biodiversity are threatened by the risk of cyclones. Our projects hope to plant various species of mangrove trees to protect the 4.5 million people living in the Sundarbans and to conserve the area’s one-of-a-kind biodiversity consisting of the country’s well-recognized Bengal tiger.²
