Is There Energy Advisor Capacity In Your Region To Support?
CHBA BC
The BC Energy Step Code is on its way and in response, CHBA BC has launched a new online training program for new Energy Advisor Students.
Description:
An Energy Advisor (EA) conducts energy audits to help British Colombian builders and homeowners solve their energy efficiency concerns, save money, and possibly have a more comfortable, healthier home. They also help reduce the impact of home energy use on our environment. The Canadian Home Builders' Association of BC offers training and certification for EAs, so you have the tools you need to deliver high-quality home energy assessments.
This Stage 1 workshop provides training on the use of the HOT2000 software which is used to model new house plans within the EnerGuide for New Houses, ENERGY STAR, and Net Zero certification programs. The course covers the responsibilities of a plan evaluator, who performs HOT2000 energy analysis of house plans, playing a key role in the quality assurance process for labelling EnerGuide, ENERGY STAR and Built Green® homes. Training is also provided on the blower door test equipment and procedures.
Cost: $2500 + tax
Course format:
Students are required to attend four (4) half-day online training sessions.
The next set of dates for Stage 1 training are: Feb 15 / Feb 22 / Mar 1 / Mar 8
8:30 am-12:30 pm for each session
Students will be required to complete weekly assignments including the submission of training files. The course will conclude with an online final exam. A pass mark of 80% is required.
Inquiries regarding the training should be sent directly to [email protected].

MIND THE GAP: PREVENTING FAILURES IN HVAC AND AIRTIGHTNESS
CHBA BC
This one-day, in-person course will take a deeper dive into the BC Energy Step Code metrics for Part 9 buildings and how to achieve Step 3 and higher through design and building techniques to build better and minimize costs. The content will focus on practical strategies for effective design, proper selection and installation of mechanical systems, and airtightness. Using real-world examples and different housing archetypes from local climates, we will examine why some projects fail while others pass easily.
This course will include an onsite component at the end of the day. Using a local onsite home, the class will participate in a blower door test. This will include hands-on preparation for the test, highlighting common problem areas as well as strategies for improvement and repairs.
If you have a home that is close to the event location (Penticton and Nelson) and would like to offer it as a test home the instructor team can provide you with a mid-construction verification for your permit compliance as this test would be considered a proper mid-construction test.

Changes in B.C. Permitting Processes for Housing Brings Cautious Optimism
Journal of Commerce
This week, CHBA BC added its voice to those of other construction industry leaders in responding to the BC government’s announcement of a “one-stop” approach to speeding up and simplifying the simplify the housing permit approval process.
CHBA BC is cautiously optimistic about the new Permitting Strategy for Housing. A single, coordinated, expedited approach to housing-related permits and authorizations and a dedicated team to streamline the process is a good first step in reducing the delays and red tape.
While there haven’t been any goals for timelines discussed with the provincial government yet, that is something that our association is advocating for. As the homebuilding industry works on predictability, setting a ‘goal post’ for these types of approvals is important. As a recognized stakeholder, we are looking forward to discussions with the provincial government to establish those timelines.
The announcement is a step in the right direction but more needs to be done at the municipal and provincial level to get permitting approved faster so more supply of much-needed housing can be built in B.C.
