The story follows the terminally ill William Joad and his quest to pass down his Oklahoma family farm to a descendant among the Joads who migrated west. When he discovers that Joads are now Mexican-American Jodes, he and his only living heir, Martín, must confront their ideas of family, legacy and America. Inspired by Steinbeck's classic, the two men travel from California back to Oklahoma, making an epic and entertaining journey on the Mother Road all while forging an unlikely bond and coming to terms with their brutal past.

The Moment Was Now returns!
After a successful run last Fall, The Moment Was Now musical returns to post-civil war Baltimore during the period of Reconstruction, "a moment when America almost did the right thing." Arlene Holt Baker, Exec VP, AFL-CIO (ret) called it "A historical masterpiece."
Echoing the current moment, the musical - written by longtime organizer Gene Bruskin -- centers around the impassioned search for unity among the dynamic leaders of powerful movements, at a meeting convened by Frederick Douglass. Hope hangs in the balance at this turning point in U.S. history. "Compelling...provocative...hard-hitting," said Chris Kaltenbach in the Baltimore Sun.

Review: Dark Waters
By Patrick Dixon
"You can't drive a union car: Taft-Hartley, union busting! We nearly invented it," says one of the junior associates at Taft Law, Robert Bilott's law firm in Dark Waters, Todd Haynes' new legal drama starring Mark Ruffalo as a corporate lawyer going against the grain. This is the true tale of the Dupont chemical company's decades-long disregard for the town of Parkersburg, West Virginia and the fight to bring the corporate colossus to account for poisoning rivers, creeks, and groundwaters.
In Parkersburg the Dupont company enjoys unrivalled power: it is the largest employer, and the town's unofficial patron, sponsoring community centers, sports teams, and highways. Its presence is unavoidable. When Bilott is first presented with evidence by a farmer that his livestock has died under mysterious circumstances he finds it hard to believe that this could be anything more than an innocent mistake on the part of Dupont, a reputable company and an icon of American business. Bilott is a natural conservative, his wife Sara, played by Anne Hathaway, is also a lawyer who formerly represented employers in worker's compensations disputes but has essentially retired to full-time parenting. Yet it is this skeptical disposition and Bilott's aversion to conspiracy theories that make him all the more compelling when he turns critic.
The response of Parkersburg residents is similarly cautious, largely convinced that Dupont, the great provider, is a good company that has their best interests at heart. "Good people," comments one mother. Through a thick shroud of gloom, Dark Waters offers insights into the ongoing paternalistic influence and power an employer can exercise within what we traditionally referred to as company towns. In this way the film is informative of the breadth and depth of challenges often faced by labor organizers, and by progressives in the broader political sphere in making entreaties to rural and mountain communities.
Now showing at Landmark's E Street Cinema and the Parkway Theatre.
