Dear Neighbor,
Last week’s shooting in Monterey Park, followed by yet another mass shooting in Half Moon Bay just days later, has left our community and our state reeling.
My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and all those affected by these tragedies. As we begin to process our grief, I know more must be done to prevent this kind of violence in the first place.
That is why I was proud to champion the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major gun violence prevention legislation in over two decades to become law. I also support several initiatives that would help stop mass shootings like the ones we witnessed here in California—from implementing universal background checks and red flag laws to reauthorizing an assault weapons ban.
Unfortunately, the new Republican majority is refusing to act on many of these critical pieces of legislation. I will not stand by and watch as Republicans put the interests of gun manufacturers over the safety of our communities.
As your Congresswoman, I will continue to push for sensible gun control legislation and work with state and local partners to ensure law enforcement agents have the tools they need to keep our communities safe.
We owe it to the people of Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay.
We owe it to the countless other communities who have felt the terrible pain we feel today.
Sincerely,
Linda T. Sánchez Member of Congress
