Weekly Digest Archive See past issues.   President's Message NASN announced this week that Executive Director Donna Mazyck, MS, RN, NCSN, CAE, FNASN, will retire on April 28, 2023, after 12 years of advocating for and serving the school nurse profession and the students, staff, and communities school nurses guide and protect. A thoughtful and strategic leader, Donna has led an expansion of the influence and impact of school nurses in addressing student and school community health and safety. Major initiatives during her tenure include the launching and operationalizing of a strategic plan focused on shared leadership, a commitment to evidence-based practice and data collection, and an emphasis on interprofessional collaboration by school nurses; the creation of the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™, defining the role of student-centered school nursing and its complex mix of community/public health, leadership, care coordination, quality improvement and standards of practice components; and the growth of NASN’s grant-funded activities to include major efforts in chronic conditions, data collection, and evidence-based practice. Donna has left an indelible mark on the organization and the profession and left NASN well-positioned as it moves into its next era, expanding and escalating its current programs and services, securing foundational school health evidence, and increasing the voice of school nurses in support of the health and safety of our students and staff. The assessment revealed the importance of focusing outreach efforts and establishing relationships with the school leadership in developing health policies and programs. The pilot data were used to develop the School Nurse-Led Active Surveillance Manual to guide school nurses in establishing surveillance to identify and track conditions like ME/CFS. Section 1115 Medicaid demonstration waivers offer states an opportunity to test new practices in Medicaid that differ from what is required by federal statute. Key themes in current approved and pending waivers include targeted eligibility expansions and benefit expansions in behavioral health. Learn more. Managing Infectious Diseases in Schools Learning Opportunity The American Academy of Pediatrics is hosting two Managing Infectious Diseases in Schools Learning Communities to advance infection control and prevention measures in schools for school nurses, school-based health center staff, and school-based health professionals. Two cohorts will be convened from March-April 2023, each consisting of three 1-hour sessions. Session topics will include managing infectious diseases in schools, building relationships that benefit all, and planning/sustainability. National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health The Trevor Project has released the results of its annual U.S. National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health segmented by all 50 states, detailing findings on the experiences of thousands of LGBTQ youth. This research provides critical insights into the suicide risk of LGBTQ young people, top barriers to mental health care, the prevalence of anti-LGBTQ victimization, and ways to support LGBTQ youth.
