*Roe
Without Roe Event*
I'm grateful to the JCC for hosting PPWP--Planned
Parenthood of Western PA [link 8] and Allegheny Reproductive Health
Center's [link 9] Roe Without Roe event on Monday to commemorate the
50th anniversary of Roe v Wade, and the first without federal
protections for abortion.
We put together care packages for patients,
completed an interactive training on abortion stigma, and held space
for patients and providers who bravely shared their experiences.
When
the US Supreme Court Roe overturned Roe, abortion was automatically
banned in over a dozen states across the country overnight. Since PA
providers now see an influx of patients from Ohio and West Virginia,
where abortion is completely banned, many have dubbed Pennsylvania a
"sanctuary state" for abortion access. But even in Pennsylvania, more
than 90% of counties do not have an abortion clinic.
Access to
abortion should not depend on a person's state or zip code. I will
continue to fight for the providers of this essential health service
and the patients who need them.

*Better
Tax Advantages for PA Treasury's Savings Programs!*
2023 is bringing
some enhanced tax advantages for PA 529 [link 16] and PA ABLE [link
17] account owners. Pennsylvanians who save with either of these great
Treasury programs will be able to deduct more from their PA state
income taxes in tax year 2023.
The Pennsylvania Treasury [link 18]
offers two PA 529 plans to help families save and pay for a variety of
future expenses at most four-year universities, community colleges,
technical schools, qualified apprenticeships, and even K-12 tuition.
Families can choose to save with the PA 529 Guaranteed Savings Plan
[link 19] or the PA 529 Investment Plan [link 20] to best meet their
education savings goals.
PA 529 College and Career Savings Program
account contributions are deductible on PA state income taxes:
-
Up
to $17,000 (previously $16,000) per beneficiary annually for
individuals; and
-
Up to $34,000 (previously $32,000) per
beneficiary annually for couples filing jointly.
PA ABLE helps
Pennsylvanians with disabilities and their families save tax-free
without impacting means-tested government benefits. PA ABLE accounts
can be used to pay for a wide range of disability-related expenses
[link 21].
PA ABLE Savings Program account contributions are
deductible on PA state income taxes:
-
Up to $17,000 (previously
$16,000) of account contributions annually; and
-
The PA ABLE
annual contribution limit also increased to $17,000 (previously
$16,000).

*Federal
Trade Commission Tax Scam Tips*
As we head into tax season, be
vigilant of scams trying to steal your personal info! Check out these
tips from the Federal Trade Commission [link 23]:
-
Never click on
links in unexpected texts.
-
Know that the IRS won't call, email,
or text you for the first time.
-
Find the status of any pending
refund on the IRS official website.
-
Report unsolicited texts or
emails claiming to be the IRS.
To learn more go to No, that's not the
IRS texting about a tax refund or rebate. It's a scam. | Consumer

*Thyroid
Disease Awareness *
January is Thyroid Disease Awareness Month! The
thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland responsible for making
hormones that play a huge role in many of the body's systems. What's
more, while 1 in 10 people suffer from a thyroid disorder, more than
half of folks with a disease are unaware of their condition! Knowledge
is power and you can learn more from the American Thyroid Association
[link 25] and their Patients Portal | Thyroid Information [link
26].
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions you
may have by phone at 412-364-0469 [link 27] (Ross Office),
724-224-2131 [link 28] (Harrison Office) or by email at
[email protected] [link 29]. My staff will return
your call/email within 24 hours (Monday-Friday).
