MAJOR VICTORY: Today the U.S. Department of the Interior announced protections for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park from sulfide-ore copper mining.

The decision bans toxic mining on federal land in the headwaters of the Wilderness and Voyageurs for 20 years.

This is the most significant Boundary Waters protection since 1978. Take action today by adding your name to this thank you card to U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. 

Today's science-based decision is a massive win for Boundary Waters protection: You don't allow America's most toxic industry next to America’s most popular Wilderness. The U.S. Forest Service’s comprehensive scientific review found that sulfide-ore copper mining would pollute the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs in ways that could not be fixed or mitigated. 

It’s critical to celebrate this historic win for the Wilderness, and thank the leaders who are protecting the Boundary Waters. Sign our thank-you card to Secretary Haaland.

The Boundary Waters is a paradise of woods and water. It is an ecological marvel, a world-class outdoor destination, and an economic engine for hundreds of businesses and many thousands of people. 

This decision moves America ever closer to permanently protecting this beloved Wilderness.

I’m immensely proud of this whole team of wilderness warriors, which includes many thousands of you across the country. Together we have advocated relentlessly, for many years, and built a powerful movement to protect the Boundary Waters forever.

Thanks to this movement, this embattled wilderness finally has a semblance of the protections it deserves.
