Indivisibles,
A little over two years ago, on January 6, 2021, Donald Trump and his allies planned and executed an insurrection that was an unprecedented, direct threat to our democracy.
When that attempt at a coup failed to overturn the results of the 2020 election, they set their sights on installing election deniers to critical positions of power at the state level last year. Thanks in no small part to the work of Indivisible groups across the country, those efforts were largely thwarted.
But they haven’t given up. The threat from an extremist GOP hasn’t dissipated. We see it every day with the MAGA Republicans who now control the House. In fact, some of those same Trump allies who pushed the Big Lie and helped plan and promote the events of January 6th are now in charge. They also have significant power over Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who spent his first weeks as Speaker implementing the Republicans’ extreme MAGA agenda by:
- Immediately empowering the most fringe members of the GOP, putting insurrectionists in charge of the majority of committees, and elevating conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene to key positions.
- Gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics so that members who played a role in January 6th could continue to evade accountability.
- Creating a brand new committee to undermine the investigations being conducted by the Department of Justice and the FBI into their own criminal behavior in the lead up to the January 6 attack on the Capitol and fake elector schemes.
Republicans might have the gavel. But we’ve got a plan to stop them and save our democracy. (Check out our hot-off-the-presses 2023 Indivisible Guide!)
The fights ahead are existential for our country -- we’re counting on this movement to come together so we can minimize the damage done by MAGA Republicans until we can sweep them out of power. Will you chip in $3 or anything you can today to help protect and preserve our democracy?
We were able to defy expectations in 2022 by expanding our Democratic Senate majority, passing historic legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act, and blocking anti-democratic extremists from controlling how our elections are run in key states nationwide.
But there’s no sugarcoating the fact that losing the House stings. It gives MAGA Republicans the power to stonewall our progress for the next two years, while using their sham committees to spread misinformation and further erode faith in the institutions that allow our democracy to function.
Our plan isn’t to sit back and hope it gets better. We must get to work -- to fight back in real time and to start right now at rebuilding a pro-democracy trifecta in 2024.
Having “emergency” funds on hand allows us to act as fast as humanly possible at key moments to expose MAGA lies, alert voters to the extreme policies being pushed by their members, and mobilize against voter suppression at the state level.
In this political climate, speed matters -- a lot. The months ahead will take the strength and dedication of this entire movement, because we know that wins don’t happen overnight. So please, if you’re able, make a contribution today so we can keep building a coordinated effort to protect our democracy and stop the extremist GOP agenda.
