Krill is helping us celebrate a massive milestone today—our 300,000th spay/neuter surgery since our founding 25 years ago!
Back in 1997 (the year PAWS Chicago was founded) 42,561 homeless pets were euthanized in Chicago that year alone. They were healthy, sweet, innocent pets, but they were victims of an overpopulation problem they had no control over.
42,561. Imagine the emotional and physical toll of that number.
Krill’s a happy, healthy boy who’s now ready for a loving family. Twenty-five years ago, a dog like him just didn’t have that chance.
PAWS was founded as a No Kill organization to end that cycle, through affordable, accessible spay and neuter surgeries. And you know what? It's working.
The euthanasia rate has decreased in Chicago by a staggering 92.5%. But if we slow down our free and low-cost spay neuter program, the killing will return. And fast. That’s why spay/neuter will always be at the core of our mission. It has quite literally changed the landscape of animal welfare, and that’s worth celebrating.
