Friend,

For many citizens, the American dream has been downsized.

In recent decades, the U.S. has become increasingly reliant on importing
goods from abroad, particularly China, leading to the closure of thousands
of factories and costing the country millions of well-paying manufacturing
jobs.

This has hurt not only the economy but also democracy.

As globalization has intensified, democracies around the world, including
ours, have experienced backsliding: polarization and far-right nationalism
have increased, while high-income countries have prioritized the profits
of multinational corporations over the well-being of their citizens.

We need a new economic patriotism that reinvests in our factory towns and
calls for a globalization rooted in the interests of ordinary Americans.
Boosting domestic production and rebalancing trade will rebuild the U.S.
as a manufacturing superpower, revitalizing the American dream.

United States.

Restoring our industrialization need not come at the expense of the rest
of the world. On the contrary, we can reawaken industries such as steel
and aluminum while preserving key trading relationships, welcoming
immigrants, and encouraging innovation. It’s a win-win situation.

Luckily, the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act have
sparked American industry by investing hundreds of billions of dollars in
key technologies, putting us on track to bring back 350,000 jobs from
overseas in 2022. I’m proud to have played a role in their passage.

What this proves is that our leaders can work together to develop human
capital and support quality jobs that will generate dynamic growth,
building a progressive capitalism for the twenty-first century.

Rebalancing trade through domestic production will help lessen tensions
with China, realize the promise of our democracy at home, and ensure that
globalization works for all Americans, not just the wealthy.
