Dear Friend,
Over the Lunar New Year holidays, celebrated by millions of Asian Americans across the country, a man opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, California (a majority Asian American community), killing 11 and injuring nine more. Barely two days later, a second mass shooting involving Asians, in Half Moon Bay, took another seven lives.
It’s not even the end of January, and our nation has already experienced 39 separate mass shootings.1 We need comprehensive gun reform now, starting with a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines!
Tell Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
While details are still emerging from both shooting tragedies, we know that the Monterey Park shooter used an assault pistol and high-capacity magazines. Assault weapons are not designed for hunting or for shooting sports, they are designed to efficiently kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time available. Brandon Tsay, one of the Monterey Park heroes who disarmed the shooter, said when he saw the shooter’s weapon, “How it was built and customized, I knew it wasn’t for robbing money…From his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people.2”
The number of mass shootings terrorizing communities every year is rising rapidly, from 273 in 2014 to 647 in 20203, more than doubling in less than a decade. In the face of such horrific gun violence that devastates families and communities for generations, Republicans in Congress should not be glorifying guns, and there is no more obvious example of that glorification than the fact that assault weapons and high capacity magazines designed for war remain in wide circulation among civilians.
Tell Congress to stop glorifying guns, and ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines now.
Military-style, semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines are designed for war, and are the weapons of choice for mass shooters, used in the heartbreaking mass shooting tragedies in Highland Park, Uvalde, Tulsa, and Buffalo. The sheer number of firearms in the United States, plus the inexcusably easy access to them, is the root cause of our unique and tragic epidemic of gun violence, which takes lives every single day.
America’s moms do not want to raise our kids in a society where schools, grocery stores, spas, clubs, churches, synagogues, mosques, movie theaters, and other venues – and even our holidays – are not safe.
Tell Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines now.
* Please forward this email to everyone you know who is concerned about gun violence, and ask them to sign too. The more of us who take action and speak out, the faster we can move gun safety policy forward and save lives.
We will never stop fighting for the safety of our families and communities.
In solidarity and love,
