In one recent mass mortality event in Alaska, upwards of 8,800 seabirds—many of them Tufted Puffins—died of starvation over a four-month period due to lack of prey. These mortality events used to be rare; now, unfortunately they’re the new normal, reflecting a fundamental shift in the ecosystem which will have widespread consequences for all of us.
This is just the latest example of the code-red crisis facing birds—and we must act now if we hope to turn the tide for seabirds and other climate-vulnerable species. That’s why we’re calling on 23 supporters to begin a dependable monthly gift today. Thanks to a generous group of donors, your gift will help unlock an additional $10,000 to protect them. Will you be one of them? ([link removed])
The sad reality of climate change:
Fish travel further offshore to colder, more productive waters—forcing seabirds to work harder to find them.
Ocean acidification leads to food chain collapse.
Rising sea levels flood nests and destroy nesting areas.
As Arctic ocean waters warm and food webs shift as a result of advancing climate change, unique seabirds like Tufted Puffins are starving to death as the fish they depend on move far off to colder, more productive waters. These birds are showing us just how profoundly climate change is impacting our planet. And if they’re in trouble, so are we.
That’s why on behalf of birds and guided by research, Audubon continues to work for practical, effective solutions to the urgent problem of climate change—just as it has for decades now. We collaborate with federal and local decision-makers to achieve common-sense climate change solutions. Not only that, we actively share important conservation methods to benefit rare and endangered seabirds worldwide through programs like Audubon’s Seabird Institute.
Together, we’re finding innovative ways to help birds survive the effects of climate change. And right now, you can start a dependable monthly gift that will help unlock another $10,000 to advocate for and protect birds ([link removed])—but please hurry. This offer is only active for a short time.
Sincerely,
National Audubon Society
