Hi John,

For decades, oil giants like BP and Shell have been driving climate devastation that is being felt by all of us, but particularly in the countries that have contributed the least emissions. Yet, BP and Shell continue to expand and make money off all our misery.

In Nigeria, multiple oil spills from Shell have poisoned waterways and land, destroying harvests and causing serious harm to communities’ health. [1] And the climate crisis driven by fossil fuels has seen record breaking 40 ℃ heat in London, 50 ℃ in Pakistan and driven millions from their homes in extreme weather events like flooding in California and typhoons across the Philippines. The climate crisis is on everyone's doorstep now.

But Shell and BP are ignoring the people losing their homes, livelihoods and even lives because of their unsatisfied greed -- and worse still, they’re eyeing up new areas for exploration.

A handful of fossil fuel companies are sitting on billions in profit, and while people struggle to heat their homes, they are pumping money into new oil despite scientists saying we need a mass switch to renewables.

John, today we're standing up to say enough is enough. If you agree, will you set up a monthly gift, to help fund our campaign? It could help us take legal action against oil giants, lobby for a proper windfall tax or continue to investigate and expose the truth about the full extent of their damage.

We have our sights set on the companies most responsible for climate chaos – like Shell, who has produced 3% of all greenhouse gas emissions since records began compared to the entire continent of Africa, which has only produced 2.8% of global emissions. [2] This demonstrates how Shell and other oil companies are fuelling the climate crisis, devastating our planet whilst Shell alone made £8.3 billion in profit in the last three months. Imagine what that money could achieve if invested in renewables like their advertising suggests? The hypocrisy is unreal.

We want to use our decades of campaigning experience by drumming up political support, and using peaceful direct action to bring their polluting work to a grinding halt. And supporters like you fuel our fight.

We’ve already taken the Government to court for approving new gas fields in the North Sea. [3] Activists have scaled a Shell oil rig to stop them drilling in the Arctic [4] and BP’s in the North sea. These are just some of the tactics we’ll be building on, doing whatever it takes to hold oil giants to account.

With Shell planning to expand its drilling in 10 areas around the world with some being completely new sites, we must act now to make sure the communities devastated by their planet-destroying practices get the justice they deserve. Today, you could play a vital role in us stopping Shell.

John, we have the knowledge, skills and experience to hold oil giants to account financially, reputationally and legally. All that’s missing is you. Will you help fund the campaign today, and stand for climate justice? It takes 2 minutes:

A world powered by renewable energy is ours for the making -- where everyone has what they need for a dignified life, and no one is forced from their home by extreme weather, polluted air or dirty waterways.

John, you're part of a movement asserting everyone’s right to a better world. We’re so glad you’re with us.

Areeba Hamid & Will McCallum

P.S. Between 2000 and 2019, the fossil fuel industry made enough profit to cover the climate-induced economic losses for 55 of the most climate-vulnerable countries – almost sixty times over. Enough is enough. Play your part by contributing today.

NOTES

[1] Nigerians could see justice over Shell oil spills after six decades

[2] United Kingdom: What share of global CO2 emissions are emitted by the country?

[3] The government approved a destructive new gas field. We’re taking them to court!

[4] You did it! Shell abandons Arctic drilling

We don't accept any money from companies or governments so we can be independent and challenge anyone who threatens the planet or peace. To help us keep fighting climate change, defending our oceans and protecting ancient forests, you can become a monthly supporter today. Thank you.
