2022: A year in review through our lens

The year 2022 has been filled with unprecedented massive humanitarian needs arising from the effects of armed conflict, climate shocks and rising food and energy prices. From starting the year with the Russia-Ukraine international armed conflict to floods in Palestine, there as been an increase in suffering. People in Afghanistan sought to move forward with their lives, while a new day in Somalia still brought huge hunger and health needs. 
 
A mother in Gaza got a chance to meet her son in his place of detention after ages, a sign that hope can still exist. In Peru, families were able to give dignified burials to their missing loved ones, finally saying their goodbyes. Meanwhile, shepherds in Azerbaijan attended sessions on risks related to weapons, learning safer behaviour and creating awareness.

This collection of images captures important moments of our humanitarian response, in collaboration with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, to assist those affected by armed conflict and natural disasters.

Times are changing for millions of people living across a war-torn world but their needs still remain immense. Despite the trauma, grief and uncertainty, people in conflict-affected countries are, nevertheless, trying to rebuild their lives. 

In 2022, many hospitals and health centres still lacked staff, drugs and other supplies, which left them unable to cope with conflict casualties as well as basic health care needs. After years of conflict, the health care system in conflict-affected countries is on its knees.
 
This is why the ICRC continues working for and with communities. But we need your help to assist the increasing number of men, women and children around the world who find themselves caught in the crossfire of conflict.
