When you think of big water you often think of big fish. Along Wyoming?s North Platte and Bighorn rivers, images of large trout, and even walleye or sauger, often come to mind. But what about the little fish, many of which are native species? Not a lot is known on a broad scale about which small-bodied fish live in these two rivers or where they?re located. However, recent work by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department on the North Platte River shed some answers, which will lead to a similar project on the Bighorn River this spring.

With 2022 behind us, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is reflecting on some of our most notable projects and news stories over the year. Each year is different, but one thing remains the same ? the department worked tirelessly to conserve more than 800 species of fish and wildlife that call Wyoming home.

Game and Fish Commission invests more dollars for wildlife crossing,?mule deer projects

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission met in Cheyenne last week for its January meeting. The Commission once again invested in wildlife crossings to help prevent vehicle collisions with big game, voting to approve an additional $750,000 toward the Kemmerer wildlife crossing project on U.S. Highway 189. The project ? consisting of underpasses, an overpass and game fencing ? will help prevent collisions with mule deer and pronghorn and create a safer road for drivers.

Submit to Game and Fish Art Show by April 3

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is expanding its Collective Conservation Stamp Art Show competition to include a new audience. Wyoming students can now participate in their own contest alongside professional artists during the annual event. The subject of the annual contest is the beaver.

Deep snow is affecting wildlife, you can help

Wyoming Game and Fish officials at the Lander Regional Office are asking residents to be aware and show patience with wildlife that often show up in developed areas during the winter months. Personnel have received several phone calls about wildlife collisions and?an overall increase of wildlife in more heavily populated areas.

Statewide, 5-year mule deer project underway

Over 200 mule deer will be captured in the Upper Shoshone region of Northwest Wyoming this month as part of the statewide Mule Deer Monitoring Project. The five year, $5.3 million dollar project will collect more information on mule deer than ever before. The project will examine six areas critical for mule deer management: abundance, composition, data management, survival, herd health and harvest management.
