Lawmakers are back in Washington this week, where House Republicans will continue advancing legislation to get our nation back on track. Energy independence remains one of our top priorities, which is why we plan to pass the Strategic Production Response Act this week. The bill would bolster our energy and national security by prohibiting the Secretary of Energy from tapping into our Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) for reasons other than a severe emergency, as intended. Additionally, the legislation requires the federal government to produce a plan to increase oil and gas production before draining the SPR, protecting our emergency resources and increasing accountability for using SPR oil. I look forward to supporting this legislation to increase American energy production and help lower gas prices for you and your family.
As you know, the U.S. reached its $31.4 trillion debt ceiling last week, prompting the Treasury Department to take so-called “extraordinary measures" to ensure the federal government continues paying its bills. Secretary Yellen has warned this will only buy a few months' time, putting the government in danger of defaulting on its debt by June or July. President Biden and Congressional Democrats are wastefully pressing for a clean debt ceiling increase — largely refusing to negotiate with House Republicans on necessary spending cuts. As discussions move forward in the coming weeks, please know that I remain committed to restoring fiscal sanity in Washington and refuse to exacerbate our national debt without making significant spending reforms.
