John, our hearts are both heavy and filled with rage.
Last week, Manuel "Tortuguita" Páez Terán, a loving comrade and forest defender, was murdered by police while fighting for their community.
They were shot in cold blood defending Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, Georgia, which is set to be demolished and replaced by “Cop City,” the largest police compound in the United States.
Manuel’s friends and family have shared how bravely and lovingly they lived their life. And we are holding them in our hearts.
That same night, after murdering a peaceful forest defender, police arrested other comrades and charged them with domestic terrorism. The police do not keep us safe. They have their own violent agenda.
We are not going to back down and we will fight for justice for Tortuguita and continue their legacy. There is no climate justice without collective liberation.
We deserve peace, safety and justice. That means we must stop Cop City. In honor of Tortuguita’s memory — and so many others who have been murdered by the police — we will keep organizing until we win the world we deserve.
As movement members in our collective struggle, we must have each other’s backs.
In solidarity,
Team Sunrise
